June 03 2010. Taraz-Almaty.

The rain was from early morning till midday time. The weather was quite dark. I didn't turn from main road but near the road I didn't see any interesting. Only once near Akterek I spotted sitting on branches Moorhen.

June 02 2010. Sary-Agash. Shardara.

Sary-Agash region. At night the strong rain was again. Day was cloudy and murky at times. I stayed overnight at village former named Ordzhonikidze, but later renamed and now people are going to rename it again. At morning I went to Shardara town which was at about 60-70 km from my overnight place. Directly from road I noted Blue-cheeked Bee-eater sitting on wires. I hoped to watch this bird and other birds of Southern Kazakhstan (such as Pied Bushchat) later, but unfortunately this spot remained single. The road around the Shardara reservoir passes by steppe zone. Birds were common to steppes: Rosy Starlings, European Bee-eater, Crested Larks, Rollers, and several times I watched Marsh Harriers. I was in this area first time but didn't feel any difference from the northerner places, probably because I didn't close neither to Shardara reservoir nor to Syradrya river.

Shardara town. Cloudy. On the little lake which is almost in the town I watched the flock of Great Cormorants, and also some groups of Great White Pelicans in the sky (one Pelican tried to find anything in self breast). On the pools from night rain I saw juveniles of Masked Wagtail. It was difficult to shot birds because of cloudy sky.

Sun occurred close to evening time. By accident I went to Kyzylasker village where I saw juvenile Barn Swallows on the pool. House Martins and Red-rumped Swallows still built the nests but some Barn Swallows already have juveniles. My direct resume by the extreme south of Kazakhstan: probably I was must to know the birding places because the dense of settlements doesn't allow to find a little place of wild nature to watch the birds, such as we doing in Almaty. In the souther villages the common birds are Laughing Doves, Collared Doves, Hoopoes, Rosy Starlings which fly in the directly kishlaks, different Swallows, Long-tailed Shrikes. At evening time I went to Taraz.

June 01 2010. Shaulder. Arys. Shymkent.

Shaulder-Arys. Day began by the rain which was almost till evening time. I went from Arystanbaba across Syrdarya river but afraid to go to Shardara because the road on map was traced by dotted line only (but later I got to know that I could do it). So I came back to Shaulder and turned to main road in Tortkol and from it to Arys. All time the rain was, birds were a bit. I can note only one Hobby was sitting directly on roadside. Arriving Arys I again tried to go to Shardara but unfortunately the road from Arys to Shardara was repairing too. Therefore I came back to Shymkent and went to Sary-Agash. The steppe over Arys was dry, Crested Larks were a lot, there were some Caspian Gulls too.

All road from Arys till Abai (through Shymkent and Sary-Agash) passes across the almost continual chain of towns and villages. I noted only common birds of southern settlements: Laughing Doves, Long-tailed Shrikes, and once I saw how Red-rumped Swallows picked up the mud to nests from the pool formed by the night rain. It's not reach day to birding.

May 31 2010. Zhanatas. Turkestan. Kentau. Otyrar.

Zhanatas. Morning was very murky. Karatau foothills bloomed by steppe flowers. Birds were active, and majority of all were Red-headed Buntings and Rollers. Also a lot of Larks (Crested, Calandra and Bimakulated). Sometimes I noted Pied Wheatears. On wires near Zhanatas hillocks I watched one Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush.

Turkestan. Mausoleum of Hodja Akhmed Yassawi. Directly in the holes of mausoleum the numerous of Mynahs and Jackdaws nested. Later I went to Kentau and hoped to find groves in the gorges of slopes of southern foothills of Karatau from Kentau side. I hoped that I could to find Paradise Flycatchers in these groves. But unfortunately I didn't achieve the gorges. But it's very probably that Paradise Flycatcher breeds in the gardens of villages over Kentau. On reservoirs I noted Common Terns.

Close to evening I went to Syrdarya in the side of Shaulder. The road passes by the plain saline steppe. The interesting observations noted by me were two only: the flock of Great White Pelicans was flying from Syrdaya side, and one Little Owl. There were some Crested Larks picked up something on the road. The sweeping on plain road cars downed slowly Larks. Cars downed any bird or animal stepped to the asphalt. I noted that in case of speed of car is 60 km per hour the each bird even slowest of all made to fly off from the road. But in case of car's speed is 100 km per hour never a one of birds didn't make to fly off. Now the cars are very fast. I think that hundreds of Spanish Sparrows are downed by cars in each colony daily. Also I think that Crested Larks are downed a lot too.

May 30 2010. Aspara. Aisha-Bibi. Karatau.

Aspara. In morning in Aspara village in the little lake I observe Coots with juveniles and Moorhens, two little Bitterns flew, one of them was shot by me. But later two Night Herons flew by. It's become a same case as yesterday's case with Marsh Harrier. I didn't identify Herons at a first sight and long observed them, but when I discerned Night Herons and started to camera the time was out. Today's Night Herons in fly were quite distinguished from gulls and other herons and them flight petrified me. Also in Aspara morning I saw Oriental Turtle Doves and many Long-legged Shrikes and later near Aspara I watched the nest of White Stork in which the Stork stood and clacked by bill. By the way the locals told me that there are not one but three nests of White Storks in the Aspara area.

Aisha-Bibi. In the memorial complex Aisha-Bibi where I was in midday time the birds were pleasured me. Firstly Desert Finches which I saw first time, secondly the Golden Oriole which I want to note specially because Oriole not flew off but flew to me and postured sitting in enclosure. Other birds were Common and Rosy Starlings and European Bee-eaters.

Karatau foothills. The road along the northern slopes of Karatau is repaired, the cars on road were a bit therefore birds became more notable. Directly in asphalt I saw Crested Larks, Tawny Pipits, Rollers, European Bee-eaters, Collared Pratincoles (probably nested birds), Corn Buntings. Later I saw Lapwings and Ruddy Shelducks in roadside pools but Chukar Partridges in the roadside rocks. Near the road there are large lakes: Akkol, Bilikol, but I didn't visited lakes because of time out. On rocks near Karatau town I observed Pied Wheatears.

May 29 2010. Sulutor. Aspara.

Avrasia. In midway between Almaty and Bishkek there is Avrasia road service. On the service building the House Martins were building the nests but mud was brought from the next pool. It was my today first stay and first photos of birds.

Sulutor, staying on Zhetyzhol ridge before the Kordai pass is very similar to Ushkonyr, it is also mid-mounting plateau. Locals said that grass in Sulutor is not fade till the autumn. Now is summer and grass in Sulutor is truly green in contrast to the yellow next steppes. Birds were Common Starlings, Rollers, Jackdaws, European Bee-eaters, Turkestan Shrikes, Lesser Grey Shrikes, Common Nightingale, Corn Bunting, pair of Wood Pigeons, in rocks Chukar Partridges, Rosy Starlings and ubiquitous Red-headed Buntings.

After Sulutor I went to Aspara. In the roadside thickets of Chu river valley sometimes the colonies of Spanish Sparrows occurred. Sparrows cross the road very low and consequence of it is frequent downing of Sparrows by the cars. The asphalt of road near colonies is covered by the tens of dead Sparrows. In evening time near Aspara village I saw male Marsh Harrier but didn't make shot it.

May 26 2010. Almaty. Samal.

From the balcony of sixth floor I shot Grey-headed Goldfinches were perching in the little tree under me.
