Kumbel. Ile Alatau National Park.

2009-06-20 | Askar Isabekov

At sunrise time I waked up and at 6 am I was on the glacier. The first birds I saw were the Yellow-billed Choughs picked up insects on the snow. Probably at cold night many insects were frozen on the snow because later I observed the Carrion Crows and the pair of Ravens picked up insects on snow too. But first birds were Choughs. By the binocular I saw that Choughs flew to the cracks of rocks. Probably there were them nests. All time Cuckoo's and some times Raven's crying were audible. In the alone little spruce tree there were the nest of Brown Accentor. The bird with the insect in the bill tried to fly by me into the spruce. Then the Wolves approached. One Wolf stood ahead of me and second one came behind. I began to photograph them and they left. In the rocks the Water Pipits occurred. They many flew and sang. I thought that I will see a lot of birds in the snow and rocks near the glacier, but I didn't see it. Later I saw one another one Brown Accentor. But I couldn't to close to it [...... read more ]

Hiking to Kumbel Glacier. Ile Alatau National Park.

In the birch forest there were a bit of birds. I saw the little flock of Grey-headed Goldfinches. Once I heard Woodpecker's drum. In the birch tree hole I found the nest of the Eurasian Redstart, also in birch forest I saw male Common Rosefinch and Mistle Thrush. Above the birch forest in the meadows I heard Grasshopper Warbler, Cuckoos and saw one flying male Pheasant. In the spruce forest Tree Pipits were the most noticeable birds. I saw Coal Tits too. Over KokJailau plateau one immature Himalayan Vulture soared. At evening time I observed the spruce forest with the low juniper bushes. In my opinion birds prefer to nest in the juniper bushes under or close to the spruce tree. In such places I saw Eversmann's Redstarts (the pair), Red-mantled Rosefinches, White-winged Grosbeaks (the pair). When I closed to the Red-mantled Rosefinches, they flashed from the juniper and hid in the spruce. But when I departed they immediately came back into the bush. Eversmann's Redstarts with insects in [...... read more ]

Sorbulak. Almaty oblast.

2009-06-14 | Askar Isabekov

There are no Rosy Starlings in Sorbulak. The colony site is empty. The loner Dalmatian Pelicans floated. Crested Grebes floated with chicks on the back. Great Cormorants were not a lot, two birds were on the bank, the single birds from time to time flew by. Grey Herons, Great White Egrets, Ruddy Shelducks with chicks, Ferruginous Ducks, Red-crested Pochards, Northern Shovelers, Black-winged Stilts, Lapwings, Caspian Gulls, Black-headed Gulls, one Kingfisher, Common Starlings. On the sand bank Terns fed juveniles; Common Terns located in one side of the bank, but Little Terns a little further. The active movement was going on inside the reeds, Coots and Crested Grebes were hearable and visible, from time to time the large warblers (probably Great Reed or Clamorous Reed Warblers) and Little Bitterns flew off from the reeds. On the back way on roadsides the most noticeable birds were Black Kites and Rosy Starlings. [...... read more ]

Today in Samal I saw two juvenile Grey-headed Goldfinches. Some years ago I watched directly in same place the singing male Grey-headed Goldfinch. It's possible to guess that Goldfinch nests in Samal. [...... read more ]

Bakanas, Southern Trans-Balkhash area.

2009-06-06 | Askar Isabekov

The most interesting. Black Stork near Bakanas. Common Nightingales sang in the bushes near Bura. Also near Bura we found the nest of White-winged Woodpecker. The nestlings were regularly cheeping in the nest-hole. Some times the nestlings were visible, they were very comic, short-billed, looked like penguins. Woodpecker brought the large larva. I thought that nestlings hang out from the nest-hole at feeding time, but today I saw that adult Woodpecker entered into the nest-hole and fed juveniles inside the hole. Recent years Woodpeckers made several holes in the asian elms, in some of holes the Saxaul Sparrows nested. The Oystercatchers are notable too, we watched Oystercatchers on Ile river bank and on the paddy fields. Twice we saw the Shikras. In the semi-desert zone we observed Terns, which were large, white and with black bills (in my opinion). Unfortunately I didn't identified them. The road from Kapchagai till Malay-Sary. The second record in Semirechye. On November 17,18 and 21st one Lesser White-fronted Goose and five White-fronted Geese were observed together at one of Karachingil lakes. Before this 3 birds had been met on March 9th of 2003 in the floodplain of Kopy near the Saz railway station (Karpov, Belyalov, Kovshar 2004).

The first record on Mangyshlak. The nearest known record points are located too much to east: Karatau ridge (Nukusbekov, www.birds.kz; Chalikova, Kolbintsev, 2005) and the foothills of Talas Alatau (Belousov, www.birds.kz).

Blackcap (Sylvia atricapilla)

VKO Katon-Karagay

The easternmost record in Kazakhstan. During migration Blackcap mostly occurs in Western Kazakhstan. For a long time the easternmost record was the observation in Borovoe (Shtegman, 1934). In Kurgaldzhino birds were recorded both in spring and autumn migration (Koshkin, 2017). In Russia this species distributes in east up to Tomsk and Kemerovo oblast (Ryabitsev, 2014; Vasilchenko, 2004). In China first Blackcap was recorded in 2012 in Kashi (Guo H., Ma M., 2013), also birds were later observed at November 21st and December 29th of 2013 (www.xinjiang.birds.watch). Probably the occurring of Blackcaps so far to east relates to the new wintering spots of the eastern populations of this species.
